July 2017 Part 2 – Wetland Shoot

The second of our reviews for our July meeting was from a shoot that we did at a wetland park.  We had the services of two local young ladies to help us try our hand at taking portraits in an environmental setting.  Neither of the girls are professional models and none of our group are that experienced at directing models, so we all learned on the hoof so to speak.  What is probably evident from some of the images below is that we all had a good time and even produced the odd decent picture !

It had been raining for a couple of days beforehand and on the day itself.  I went up to the park at around 4:00 p.m. to see how it looked and if the ground was going to be unsuitable.  In the event, it was fine.  We were also lucky with the weather as it stopped raining around the same time I went up there and when we gathered the sun even came out !

If you would like to join us, check out the Monthly Meeting section which will give you all the information about when, where and what.  You will see that we try to learn from each other and cover a variety of topics and also have some sessions learning different tricks using Photoshop in the school’s IT suite.  While not everyone has Photoshop, some of the things we do can be translated into other image editing software.

The club is for anyone interested in photography whether you’re a beginner or professional.  Come and see for yourself – you’ll be most welcome.

July 2017 part 1 – Church Shoot

This month we spent time reviewing images from two outings we had.  This one has the images from a church shoot we did one evening.  We had thought we would be okay with the light as it was late June, but wouldn’t you know it, it had been an overcast day and evening.  Never mind, members enjoyed the experience and produced some interesting shots.

My personal favourite from these was the shot of the door with the cobwebs on the wall.  I liked it so much I took the liberty of playing with it and converted it to a black and white image which it lends itself to, producing an atmospheric shot.

Why not come and join us and share your experience and favourite topics to shoot. If you’re just beginning to get interested in photography there are plenty willing to help you.  Our members range from the very new to those with many years experience; from simple bridge type cameras to professional level DSLR.  Interests are diverse – from underwater photography to abstracts.  Something for everyone.  Check out the Monthly Meetings section – we’d love to see you !

December Meeting, 2015

Well, this was both a last and a first.  A last because it is the last club meeting of the year and a first because the session lasted two hours and took place in the academy’s IT suite.  The idea was that we’d start to introduce a bit of image editing into our sessions from time to time.  You may think, if you’ve looked back over the posts, that we’re holding some kind of school – we’re not.  What we try to do is share whatever skills we have on various subjects to help all of us become better image makers.  Fancy the idea – then why not join us.  We meet every 3rd Tuesday of the month at Parkside academy.  All you need to do when you arrive at the main entrance is ask security for the Willington Photography Club and you’ll be directed you to us.

Here are some of the photographs brought by members for the monthly challenge which was quite broad – winter or detailed close-up.

November Meeting

We met on 17th November and started by having a look at the images members have taken on the Autumn theme.  We had some good shots as members are beginning to take more time looking at what it is they are shooting.  Something we can all do more of no matter how long we’ve been taking pictures.

The new venue is proving marvellous.  Meeting in the lecture theatre gives us lots of space to try things.  As part of the session we set up a couple of tables with some items on and a continuous lamp to light them.  Members had a go at different compositions, capitalising on what we did last session.  Some members found new functions on their cameras as we all tried to help each other where we could.  That is what the club is really all about – helping and learning from each other.

Have a look at the images below and let us know what you think.  If you would like to come along and have a chat and find out what it’s all about we’d love to see or hear from you.  The next session is on 15th December and will be a practical using Photoshop to do some image editing.  Should be fun !

The last 2 images were a couple that were played around with in Photoshop to show the variations that are possible when you make time to play !

See you next month.

October 2015

We gathered for our second meeting at Parkside Academy and welcomed three new members.  We lost one member (in the nicest possible way) as he was moving to around Manchester with his job and we wish him well with that.

We had our usual look at images from the monthly challenge which was to capture Autumn.  We had some really good images to view and you can see them below.

For the rest of the evening we reviewed how we can go about getting a composition in our images.  We looked at the ‘Rule of Thirds’, using lead-in lines, seeing triangles within the image, framing and reflections.  This is one of the foundations of good photography and matters little whether you use a phone camera or the latest, top-end digital SLR.  Of course, the beauty and balance within an image is very much down to the individual and often these guidelines are broken and it is often then that stunning images are created.  However, knowing these guidelines and practicing them can help us to know when they should be broken.

We have said that the Willington Photography Club is for anyone who enjoys taking images regardless of the camera.  To that end, one of our members took his Autumn challenge using his mobile phone and the images below are what he got.  Granted the shot of the leaf was edited to give it the feeling of movement, but it shows that pleasing images can be captured even on a phone.

The phone image of the leaf provided a second use.  Using fully automatic settings can result in images that aren’t quite properly exposed.  The leaf is lying on the ground which should be very dark, almost black in fact.  Here, straight out of the phone, it looks quite grey.  The reason being that historically (and currently as far as we are aware) film and sensors use an 18% grey standard.  Therefore, anything that is black it will over-expose to try to reach the 18% grey, and images with lots of white will under-expose.

Our challenge for the November meeting is to capture something to show late Autumn, which will include Halloween and bonfire night.  Fireworks provide their own challenge when trying to capture them, but more on that next month.

Please let us know what you think or if you want to know more.  Why not come along and join us and share our passion.

September Meeting

It’s been some time since we managed to update the blog – too much going on in life.

However, we had our first meeting at our new venue on 15th September at Parkside Academy.  We were sorry to leave the Willington Resource Centre as they have been so helpful and accommodating, and we thank them for it.  Unfortunately, it seemed that a daytime meeting was difficult for a number of people we spoke to about the club.

At Parkside, we have the use of the lecture theatre and we intend to make use of one of their IT suites to help us learn more about image editing, etc.

Why not consider joining us to share and learn more about this fantastic hobby.  Members of the group have a wide variety of interests and experience – from newbies to those who developed their own films back in the day.  In terms of interest, we have those interested in landscapes, macro photography, underwater and astral photography.

The club has been undertaking a project over the summer to try to document the various events and some of the businesses in and around Greater Willington.  We are hoping to put up an on-line gallery of images and are looking to see if we can get some sponsorship to present an exhibition in one or more venues (probably next spring).

In the previous meeting we had been considering monochrome images and not just black and white.  The challenge was to prepare monochrome images and say why they had been chosen and what had been done to them.

As you can see there are a variety of treatments and subjects.  Why not let us know what you think and maybe consider coming along and joining us – we’d love to see you.

July Exhibition – with images

July Exhibition

For the month of July, the club is holding it’s first photographic exhibition.  The exhibition can be found in the Butterfly Cafe in Commercial Street, Willington.  Why not try to pop along and see what our members have been up to.  There are a variety of topics and skill levels represented.

All the images you see are for sale at the size they are (either 15 x 10 or 14 x 11 inches).  The cost is £12 per print, which is supplied unmounted allowing you to select the best way to display it for yourself.

If there is an image you would like to order, then please use the “Please Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the page (it will not appear on the site) and we will get back to you to arrange payment and delivery.  If you would like a different size for the image please give us some idea of the size and we will give you a price (NB: not all images will go much larger, while some will go considerably larger).

The images you will see are shown below (NB: the numbers here may not equate with the numbers in the cafe).

January

January Meeting

We met at the beginning of January, most of us still feeling the effects of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.  We had our usual chat around images we had taken and seen.  For a bit of fun, and to try out a new technique, we played around with ‘zooming’ – not the easiest of techniques to master, but one that can bring some interesting images.  We had a sample image to look at and then set up the intrepid Lego men for each member to have a Zooming the Christmas treego at.  Obviously, this relies on the fact that you have a camera that will allow good control of the zoom lens.  Even had there been someone who didn’t have such a camera or was still using film, there was sufficient cameras with that capability for anyone to have a go.  Hopefully we’ll get some of the images up soon.

December Meeting

December Session

_DSC1302Our meeting began with showing some images we had taken to try to capture Autumn – that was our monthly challenge (you can see a couple on this page).

A brief discussion was had about the club holding an exhibition of images taken by the members, possibly in the summer.  Watch this space.

IMG_0152We talked, in more detail, about using shutter speed and aperture settings creatively and how to steady oneself when taking images with slower shutter speeds, especially when a tripod was not to hand.

We decided that the monthly challenge would be for an image that says “Christmas” to us.

November Get Together

The group met 5th November and started by looking at some images that we might use for the banner of this site.  There were several good ideas and others were discussed.  We hope that searching for shots to use as a banner and background will go on throughout the year so we can keep updating these every few months.

Members had asked if we could look at how to hold a camera securely while taking different types of shots.  We started with the basic grip for normal shooting and moved onto ways in which we could hold the camera securely in different situations.  Several members shared their experiences of how they had taken shots when using slow shutter speeds or windy conditions.  We also discussed the use of a tripod and the sort of things to look for when considering a purchase.  Also little tricks to help ensure sharp pictures while using a tripod were discussed.

There was also a brief discussion about how to weather proof a camera while photographing in inclement weather.  This will probably be re-visited again in a future meeting.

The challenge for this month is to encapsulate autumn in a single image.  Not as straightforward as it might seem.
